Report: “Non-market-based Approaches to Reducing Deforestation and Forest Degradation

Global Forest Coalition, ICCA Consortium and Econexus (2013)

Summary: Market mechanisms have proven to be a highly problematic source of funding for climate change mitigation and adaptation in terms of equity, efficiency and environmental and social effectiveness whilst also resulting in unintended negative consequences. However, many non-market based approaches to addressing deforestation and forest degradation have been shown to work, not only from an environmental perspective, but also from a social, cultural and economic viewpoint. Recognition of indigenous peoples’ territories and community conserved areas (ICCAs) is one non-market based approach to reducing forest loss that has proven to be highly effective.
