En Chile, el Observatorio Ciudadano y la Comunidad de Quinquén - ambos Miembros del Consorcio TICCA - organizaron un taller de intercambio de saberes y experiencias, al que acudieron veinticinco representantes de diez comunidades indígenas, para intercambiar acerca estrategias legales y no legales de defensa y protección territorial. Read more ▸
In Madagascar, as the government develops a legislative framework on special status areas that will include community land rights, TAFO MIHAAVO and MIHARI, both ICCA Consortium Members, are collaborating to ensure that indigenous peoples’ and local communities’ voices are heard, and their areas and heritage secured. Read more ▸

Regional - ICCA Consortium Initiatives

A few months after the Regional Assembly, Aibek Samakov, interim Council Member with special responsibility for West and Central Asia and the Caucasus, offers his reflections on the outcomes of the event and the future of ICCAs in the region. Read more ▸
The first of a series of regional dialogues on Alternatives to Unsustainable Livestock Production was held in Africa, jointly organised by the Global Forest Coalition, ICCA Consortium Member, and Zelealem Tefera, ICCA Consortium Council Member. It highlighted the opportunities and the source of knowledge that ICCAs, especially traditional pastoralist communities, represent. Read more ▸
In July 2019, indigenous peoples and local communities met in West Kalimantan to discuss opportunities and challenges for the strengthening of their human rights within the Heart of Borneo Initiative, through new forestry schemes, advocacy, and international conventions. Read more ▸

International - ICCA Consortium Initiatives

From organising demonstrations to delivering statements in UN plenary sessions, representatives of indigenous peoples and local communities around the world are creating an “ecosystem” of collective actions for rights-based approaches and intergenerational equity -- and tackling the drivers of biodiversity loss as key elements of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. Read more ▸
Paul Sein Twa, ICCA Consortium Honorary member, participated in the World Water Week in Stockholm, where he strongly advocated for the recognition of ICCAs’ contributions through a right-based approach to conservation, as a key element for the success of any ongoing and future environmental protection and climate change initiatives. Read more ▸
Natural Justice, ICCA Consortium Member, participated in a global meeting to confront the current planetary crisis by fostering the protection of our sacred natural sites and ensuring the restoration of Earth’s ecosystems and biodiversity. The meeting led to the creation of The Alliance for the Sacred Sites of Earth Gaia. Read more ▸
Representatives from seventeen indigenous wisdom traditions came together in London. Travelling from diverse territories around the Earth, the Indigenous delegates brought with them a shared and inspiring vision of how humans might participate once more in the sacred cycles of life. The Gaia Foundation, Member of ICCA Consortium, participated. Read more ▸
Participants in this meeting were invited to deepen their understanding of our shared responsibility to create and preserve places where diversity can flourish. Eunice Kerexu, of Brazil, offered this: “We invite you to reforest your hearts and minds. Help us enforce our rights internationally.” Read more ▸

This article, from the Journal for Nature Conservation, recognizes the central role of ICCAs - territories of life in conservation. It demonstrates that their recognition among academics is increasing dramatically. Read more ▸
